EEDC restores supply to Imo as labour suspends strike

Posted on May 9, 2023May 9, 2023 By thTV Admin, Owerri No Comments on EEDC restores supply to Imo as labour suspends strike

The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company on Tuesday resumed full operations in Imo State following the suspension of the week-long industrial action embarked on by organised labour in the state.

The suspension followed an agreement on Monday between the Imo State Government, the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress, for a peaceful resolution of outstanding issues.

This is contained in a statement issued by the EEDC’s Head of Corporate Communications, Mr Emeka Ezeh, in Enugu.

Ezeh said that consequently, the Transmission Company of Nigeria, which is the primary source of power supply to the EEDC, had been directed to immediately restore supply for distribution to customers within Imo.

“By this development, power supply was restored to Owerri metropolis and most parts of the state yesterday, while effort is being made to gradually restore the remaining areas today, Tuesday.

“EEDC, therefore, appreciates its esteemed customers in Imo State for the calm and understanding they displayed while the industrial action lasted,” he said.

The EEDC spokesman said that the company was “already gradually picking supply and distributing to our customers across Imo State.

“We remain committed and consistently working to deliver improved services to our esteemed customers,” he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria recalls that on May 1, the organised labour at its joint Central Working Committee meeting, directed all affiliates of both NLC and TUC in Imo State to withdraw their services effective from 12 midnight on May 2.

The withdrawal of workers’ services was over alleged violent disruption and unprovoked assault on Imo State workers by agents of the Imo State Government during the May Day celebration.
